What's Going On

Caldas da Rainha brought the week into focus.

A visit to co-host Dorothy Bulac-Eriksen’s studio (@syzygy_designs) filled the room with new techniques, shared questions, bright ideas, and the kind of conversation that happens when knitters gather around something they love.

After days of mills, shepherds, color, texture, and wool in nearly every form, our travelers carried home a deeper understanding of how fiber can spark imagination and possibility.

Thank you to every knitter who joined us for the Portugal Knitting Experience: Wool Works. You brought curiosity, creativity, and so much heart to every step of the journey.

Warm water. Soft wool. A little soap. A lot of laughter. Inside New Hand Lab, our travelers joined Covilhã-born textile artist @anarita_de_arruda for a felting workshop that was playful, tactile, and wonderfully imaginative.

Ana Rita now lives and works in Porto, so having her return to Covilhã to lead this experience felt especially meaningful.

With old factory walls, bright wool, and creativity in every corner, @new.hand.lab was the perfect backdrop for an afternoon full of texture, color, and good company.

Covilhã rewards the curious.

There’s color around every corner: painted walls hum with the memory of mills, and street art turns unfamiliar streets into an open-air gallery. At @new.hand.lab, that same spirit moves through fiber: texture, movement, and imagination creating something new from what has always been here.

In the Serra da Estrela, wool begins with land and flock.

The soft tinkling of bells across the hillside. The taste of fresh sheep and goat cheeses, local honey, and warm bread at the table. The steady rhythm of spinning and weaving at EcoLã and Burel Factory, turning fiber into thick blankets, burel coats, and contemporary forms.

Here, wool still feels inseparable from daily life.

Filipa Carneiro (@filipa_nionoi) is co-hosting the Portugal Crochet Experience in March 2027!

Based in Lisbon, Filipa is a designer, teacher, and one of the leading voices in Portuguese fiber arts, known for blending heritage techniques with a fresh, modern sensibility.

She teaches Portuguese crochet, a distinctive method where the yarn is tensioned around the neck or a pin, a style shaped by tradition and still practiced today.

Over the years, she’s built a global following through her YouTube channel, where more than 40,000 knitters and crocheters return to her tutorials again and again.

We’re excited to share time with Filipa in Portugal. There’s still room to join!
