The Portugal Crochet Experience is a journey designed for crocheters—where yarn, culture, and community come together in some of Portugal’s most beautiful settings. With a guest crochet host guiding the creative journey and tour director Paz Gutiérrez taking care of every detail, you’ll explore Portugal’s vibrant fiber traditions, meet artisans who continue time-honored techniques, and crochet in memorable places that invite creativity and connection.

Our adventure begins in Lisbon. Explore colorful neighborhoods lined with tiled buildings and scenic viewpoints while discovering yarn shops stocked with beautiful Portuguese fibers. Between wandering the city’s lively streets, pause for a glass of local wine and a warm pastel de nata as the creative journey begins.

From Lisbon we travel into the Alentejo and the beautiful walled city of Évora. Its narrow streets reveal Roman landmarks, shady squares, and whitewashed homes trimmed with warm color. This region is known for its textile traditions, and you’ll meet artisans who continue working with techniques rooted in local history. Along the way, enjoy the rich dishes and bold wines that define the flavors of Alentejo.

Our final stop is the seaside village of Carvoeiro along Portugal’s Algarve coast. Surrounded by striking cliffs and sweeping ocean views, it’s an inspiring place to relax with yarn and hook in hand. Nearby markets invite exploration, with stalls offering baskets, ceramics, and handmade treasures that reflect the creativity of the region.

Meet Your Hosts

Crochet Host

We are currently finalizing the crochet host who will guide this experience and look forward to introducing them soon. Our goal is to invite a designer and teacher who brings creativity, curiosity, and a welcoming spirit to the group.

Along the journey, the host will lead crochet-focused sessions while the group explores Portugal’s rich textile heritage. From wool traditions to contemporary artisans, the experience blends time to stitch together with opportunities to discover the people and places shaping fiber arts in Portugal today.

Paz Gutiérrez

Paz is a tour guide, translator, and lifelong knitter based in Madrid. For nearly 30 years, she has led travelers across Europe, weaving together stories of art, history, and culture while uncovering the hidden corners that make each place unforgettable.

Languages are her constant companions: with a Master’s in Law and a Postgraduate degree in Translation, she works fluently in English, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Now she's tackling Greek simply for the joy of learning.

Textiles are in her blood. The granddaughter, daughter, and sister of professional tailors, Paz grew up surrounded by fabrics, wool, and needles. She first picked up knitting needles at the age of six and later discovered crochet while recovering from a broken foot.

When she’s not on the road, Paz divides her time between Madrid and Wales, working as a translator, including knitting patterns for international designers and websites. With her mix of cultural knowledge, linguistic ease, and lifelong passion for textiles, she is a natural host for travelers seeking connection through craft and discovery.

Welcome & Cast-On

Arrive in Lisbon and check in at your hotel, ready to embrace Portugal’s vibrant culture. Gather for an Orientation & Mystery Crochet Along (MCAL) Cast-On session, meeting fellow crocheters before enjoying a Welcome Dinner. Share excitement, swap stories, and set the stage for an inspiring journey filled with fiber arts, creativity, and discovery.

Lisbon

Portuguese Style & City Exploration

Begin with a workshop at the Depózito, where you’ll learn the Portuguese crochet style and techniques. Enjoy a bistro lunch before meeting Rosa Pomar at her shop, where she shares insights on Portuguese fibers. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Lisbon’s streets, visiting museums, browsing artisan shops, or relaxing in a historic café, soaking in the city's atmosphere.

Lisbon to Évora

Royal Rugmaking & Roman Ruins

Travel to the small village of Arraiolos to learn about the historic rugmaking tradition including a visit to our artist friend Hortense who will demonstrate the continuation of this fascinating craft. Continue to Évora, check into your hotel, then take a guided tour through medieval streets, uncovering Roman ruins, Gothic churches, and artisan boutiques.

Estremoz

Tile & Tastings

We explore Estremoz through a museum dedicated to the remarkable history of Portuguese tiles. A memorable Alentejo lunch introduces the bold flavors and wines of the region. We continue into the surrounding countryside where Portugal’s cork landscape unfolds and a working estate welcomes us for a tasting of local olive oils before returning to Évora.

Monsaraz

Wool Craft & Artistry

Paula Neves welcomes us to her farm, where we’ll bond with her sheep and gain insight into their care. In the afternoon, she leads a hands-on wool workshop, guiding us through cleaning, carding, and spinning wool. On the way back to Évora, stop off at Fábrica Alentejana de Lanifícios where you'll see artisan weavers creating traditional blankets, modern accessories and stunning home decor.

Day 6 TUE

Évora

Wandering & Workshops

We enjoy Évora at an unhurried pace. Historic streets, small shops, and shaded squares offer space for wandering, conversation, and time to catch up on the MCAL. Our Crochet Host gathers us for a workshop that continues the creative exchange shaping the week. In the evening we follow curiosity through the city, perhaps discovering a local bistro or returning to a place that captured our attention.

Évora to Carvoeiro

Winery Lunch & Coastal Arrival

Travel south toward the Algarve, passing rolling hills and picturesque cork forests. Stop at Quinta do Quetzal Winery for a delicious lunch with regional wines. Take a moment to enjoy their unexpected art gallery. When you arrive in Carvoeiro, you can unwind at the resort, stroll coastal cliffs, or crochet by the sea.

Textile Art & Moorish History

Visit Vanessa Barragão’s textile studio, where sustainability meets art in breathtaking fiber creations. After an inspiring morning, enjoy lunch on your own while wandering the charming streets of Lagos. In the afternoon, climb to the castle in the Moorish capital of Silves to look out over the historic center of the Algarve region.

Creative Workshops & Artisan Experiences

Spend the day in collaboration with Loulé Criativo, where skilled artisans share their knowledge of traditional crafts. Engage in immersive, hands-on workshops, learning time-honored techniques from masters of the trade. This day is dedicated to creativity, heritage, and skill-building, offering a rare chance to deepen your understanding of Portugal’s artisanal traditions.

Savor a final day in the Algarve—crochet by the sea, wander through charming shops, or soak up the coastal beauty. As the sun sets, gather for a celebratory Farewell Dinner, reminiscing about the journey and unveiling the stunning results of the Mystery Crochet Along project.

Whether you extend your stay in the Algarve to explore its stunning coastline, charming villages, and vibrant culture, set off for another exotic destination, or transfer back to Lisbon to catch your flight home, the warmth of Portugal’s culture and craftsmanship will stay with you long after the journey ends, leaving you with cherished memories and inspiration.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The tour ends in Carvoeiro - is a transfer available back to Lisbon or another place?

Some guests may decide to stay on to relax or explore more of the Algarve, and others may want to head to Faro or Lisbon to catch a flight. We will arrange a coach transfer to Lisbon on the day the tour ends, with the cost to be determined based on the number of people interested. We can also arrange for transfers to Faro airport, the train station at Albufeira, or other locations on request.

Is an arrival transfer available from the airport to the hotel?

Yes! We can arrange a transfer from the airport to the starting location. The current price appears on the registration page. Transfers can added or removed up to 30 days before the start of the tour, so no need to decide right away.

I don't have a roommate, is it possible to share a room with someone else on the tour?

We typically have travelers looking to share rooms and are happy to introduce potential roommates. Once we have all of the registrations in, we can put you in touch with others that are looking to share, so you can be sure that you'll enjoy your time together. We understand it's a challenge spending so much time with someone you haven't met before!

How many people will be on this tour?

The tour has a minimum number of 14 participants and a maximum of 18.
